Resolve to go digital in 2012

As the New Year gets underway everyone’s talking about New Year’s resolutions. The most popular resolutions in our office are the old favourites: eat better, exercise more and try to leave the office on time (except on days where deadlines or events dictate otherwise!).  Biscuits and tins of chocolates have been well and truly banished as we dedicate ourselves to being a lean, mean, marketing machine!  

In the run up to Christmas we encouraged shoppers to buy Irish, and now we've moved on to encouraging people to go digital as we feel strongly that an on-line presence is crucial to the marketing mix.

I have to say ‘the newspaper of report' - The Irish Times - is really impressing me with the amount of Cork related reportage over last few months - from the piece on Cork's Merchant Princes to the Next Generation of Cork's Business Elite recently. Some great marketing for us!

Now, to help us Corkonians and the rest of the nation, they are publishing two supplements on the impact of the Budget. One today - Spending Review 2012 (cuts in social welfare, education, health and elsewhere) and one tomorrow – the full shebang – Budget 2012 - the total impact, the additional tax burden on you and me, the spending cuts and the political impact (not too interested in this myself thanks but you politicos will be). Ahhhhhhhhh!

I’m sure you heard our MD, Mark Hopkins on 96FM’s Neil Prendeville show last week talking about buying Irish.  Here at HC we feel pretty strongly about it, it’s our future no doubt.   When it comes to supporting Irish Business actions speak louder than words.....

“Vote with your feet” is an often used expression urging people to show their support with more than just talk and actually take action. This year and especially at Christmas time, it’s sooooo important for us all to vote with our feet and come out in support of local and Irish business.

RTÉ’s ‘Do The Right Thing’ runner-up Aisling is up for whatever the future holds

‘Do the Right Thing’ – an RTÉ television show which was aimed at finding the Ultimate Volunteer saw Aisling Moran from Glanmire, Cork beat off stiff competition to reach the final, although she was pipped at the post by fellow contestant Carol Leonard from Athlone.

p>The show began with over 1,200 applicants which was then whittled down to an eventual 16 participants in 8 shows. Of that sixteen only two (one male, one female) could go forward to win a year’s all-expenses paid volunteering assignment . Aisling was the runner up in the female category, just missing out on the opportunity to ‘do the right thing’!

When I was asked to be interviewed for this, I hesitated, to be honest. I’ve been in the press a lot lately, either for our firm, our client firms, The Rotary Club of Cork or one of the other organisations I am involved with. I thought this might be over-kill, seen as self-promotion! Self-promotion is not the preserve of the media classes, it is a modern-day practice in all our lives, whether we like to admit it or not. From our first day at school, right through to old age, we promote ourselves: ‘Look at me Mammy;’ best foot forward; smile before you dial; slap on the make-up; flashy tie; firm handshake; dress to impress.

I’ve been involved in the promotion business for almost twenty-five years now and to my mind, most people’s lives involve some form of self-promotion or other – call it self-preservation, ambition, or a yearning to say your piece or become involved in society. We have a really progressive, self-promoting society, now and it is children, oddly enough, who mirror that best.
