"Hopkins Communications proved to be invaluable in assisting the Barbarian FC market the first Barbarians v Ireland International Rugby match in Limerick – Thomond Park on Friday 4th June 2010....
‘Do the Right Thing’ – an RTÉ television show which was aimed at finding the Ultimate Volunteer saw Aisling Moran from Glanmire, Cork beat off stiff competition to reach the final, although she was pipped at the post by fellow contestant Carol Leonard from Athlone.
The show began with over 1,200 applicants which was then whittled down to an eventual 16 participants in 8 shows. Of that sixteen only two (one male, one female) could go forward to win a year’s all-expenses paid volunteering assignment . Aisling was the runner up in the female category, just missing out on the opportunity to ‘do the right thing’! ‘Each show was very challenging and everyone was put to the pin on their collars to produce the desired result – from caring for children in Chernobyl to sleeping rough and raising awareness of the plight of flood victims for Trocaire on the streets of Cork’ said Aisling.
Participants were eliminated by their peers after every show, but Aisling hung in there every week, right up to the last week. Her participation in the show was summed up by her fellow colleagues as follows: ‘She is POW – but POW in a good way’ said one; ‘A diplomat’ said another; ‘Near perfection’ said a third, and so on. Brendan Morrissey declared: ‘If they ever plug Sellafield out they could plug in Aisling to keep it running!’ Throughout all of the challenges from building a home in Zambia to helping the children of Chernobyl to living rough on the streets of Dublin and Cork, Aisling had the opportunity to play to her strengths.
As Aisling herself says ‘It has been a rollercoaster of emotions – there have been extreme highs and lows, moments of pure joy and exhilaration. Without doubt there have been moments of utter disappointment. I have embraced it all and I certainly have no regrets.’
Aisling holds a Master in Advertising from DIT and has worked in the advertising and marketing sector for a number of years. She has also travelled extensively throughout the world, from Vietnam and The Philippines right down to Cape Clear Island in West Cork where she was a youth leader for the Irish College there. ‘While I am really disappointed not to have been chosen to go on that volunteering mission I know that the experience gained is immeasurable. My choice of career would be in the media, either as TV or radio presenter, researcher or communications so who know what the future will bring in that regard. I feel I have the determination, compassion and listening skills to get the best out of people from all walks of life’.
