Since February, almost 100 primary schools nationwide have been digging and cultivating their kitchen themed gardens in the 4HOME’s ‘Let’s Get Gardening’ competition. This week Scoil Iosaf in Castlemartyr, Cork was awarded first place in the overall competition for their outstanding effort and green fingers.

3rd and 4th class, lead by teacher Elma Wade were delighted with their win and really adopted the kitchen theme literally in their fruit and vegetable plot. The plants poured out of kettles, pots and pans while the background of the garden encompassed a large dresser showcasing personalised crockery from each participating child.

Celebrity Chef Rachel Allen, who endorsed the competition, was on-hand to present the children with their cash prize which will be used to fund inter-active whiteboards in the school. “The children’s efforts were absolutely fantastic, the improvement in the garden since the start of the year has been phenomenal,” said Rachel “ The school and the children are all so enthusiastic about the competition and hopefully the win will spur them on to grow and cook at home as well.”

Second place went to Limerick school, St. Brigid’s in Singland and third place was claimed by Kilanerin NS, Gorey, Co. Wexford. Donagh McClafferty, Managing Director, 4HOME Superstores applauded the winning school, “The children have learnt so much by participating in this competition.
They developed both practical and life skills and we hope they also had a lot of fun! 4HOME Superstores were delighted to be involved and the enthusiasm of all those who participated is infectious,” said Donagh.
